Deng Sui ran the empire until she died in 121; the emperor then destroyed her family, handed the government to his wet nurse, his in-laws and the eunuchs, and presided over the first serious loss of the western frontier. He died on the road at thirty-two.
The Qiang wars of his reign cost more than the treasury held and ended with the Han abandoning territory in the northwest it never fully recovered.
Empress Yan Ji was childless, had the mother of the heir poisoned, and on her husband's death tried to keep power by putting an infant on the throne. The eunuchs deposed her within months.
