Visiting James Choo’s Animegg Kingdom Studio in Hong Kong

In the summer of 2013, my mom Li and I had the opportunity to visit Hong Kong. We also finally visited our dear friend James Choo‘s magical Animegg Kingdom Studio.

James is an international movie art director with over 20 years of experience. He has successfully directed movies that vary in genre from drama, action to animation. Some of the familiar names James has worked with in the past include Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Chow Yun-fat, Milla Jovovich, and more.

Here’s a picture of Jackie Chan (left) and James Choo (right).

There’s something truly profound about being in an artist’s work environment, meeting with his team. Everyone was so friendly and open-minded. My mom was able to showcase some of her work in progress and had an engaging discussion with everyone in the room.

Below: we are smiling at a collection of panda designs Li created on rice paper. This series was originally meant to teach Chinese watercolor art to children and adults in the US. We ended up producing a series of holiday cards as well because everyone loved them so much.

Below: the team is looking at the very beginning of the Chinese Empress collection. What a sacred moment! At the time in 2013, my mom had only completed just a few empress paintings. Ten years later, she had completed nearly 150 of these intricate characters on very large silk panels.
